Dec. 3, 2023

In the ever-evolving landscape of innovation, Zain Iraq is shining a light on the power of technology to uplift and empower individuals with disabilities. Submitted by Noor Abdulrazzaq to Zainiac, "Afkar" is a competition developed to support Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) through ingenious technological solutions. It is a catalyst for change, fostering the principles of inclusion and accessibility.

Unveiling Afkar: Where Ideas Ignite

To celebrate the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, Zain Iraq hosted the Afkar competition that invited people to ideate, innovate, and contribute to a more inclusive world. The ideas received were then filtered, selecting those that align with the competition's core principle - leveraging technology to empower and include PWD. Five ideas were shortlisted to compete in the finals. These finalists received expert guidance on how to develop and sell their ideas. Afkar crowns the winners with more than just financial prizes; it celebrates the spirit of innovation that is set to make a lasting impact.

The Winners of Afkar:

1. Technology in Hands to Serve Blind People: Abdul Hameed's story resonates with resilience and innovation. His tools, enhancing independence for the visually impaired, exemplify the transformative power of technology. He added high-quality alarm sensors to devices such as smart canes, sensors to measure liquid levels in cups, sensors to recognize clothes colors, and sensors for dark and light areas.

2. With You App: Dr. Hana’a's "With You" app goes beyond technology; it creates a community. Connecting PWDs and caregivers with essential services, like transportation, hair styling, and companionship for doctor visits. The app facilitates transactions using e-money and offers a points reward system. This app transforms daily challenges into opportunities for connection and support.

3. Special Taxi for PWD: Rusol and Murtadha envision a world where transportation is truly accessible. Their idea to collaborate with ride-sharing services like Careem and Uber to offer specially designed cars with back seat ramps for people who use wheelchairs highlights the potential for inclusivity in the private sector.

Afkar is all about breaking barriers, challenging norms, and creating a future where technology is a bridge to inclusivity. The competition is a testament to the belief that innovation has the power to transform lives, making the world a better place for everyone.
